Named after the patron saint of musicians, Northeast Ohio’s premier mariachi band returns to Kent for a performance of traditional and modern songs of Mexico, using trumpet, vihuela, guitarrón, accordion, and vocals. The band’s performance is presented in conjunction with Standing Rock Cultural Arts’ 17th annual Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) art exhibition, and the 27th anniversary of the North Water Street Gallery.
The art exhibition, which is curated by Vince Packard, will feature paintings, prints, collage, puppets, masks, and photographs by artists including Vince Packard, Elizabeth Ann Lax, Ryan Logan, Trey Berry, Joshua Bentley, Nikki Puccini, Amy Strainer, and more, and an ofrenda (altar in memory and honor of the ancestors) by Amy Strainer.
The evening’s festivities will begin at 7 p.m. and end at 10 p.m., with the band’s performance taking place from 8 p.m. until approximately 9 p.m., and concluding with a parade to the Kent gazebo at the corner of Main and Water Streets (drummers welcome!).
We will be taking a collection for the family of Vicente Hernandez, who is currently being held in detention by ICE in Cleveland. Vicente has been the lead vocalist for Mariachi Santa Cecilia for nearly 10 years, and has been a beloved member of his community for over 20 years. He has three children who are U.S. citizens, one of whom is in elementary school.
